I also have 2 pair of the Icebreaker merino bottoms (their 150g & 200g versions). I like the Smartwools better, as the elastic waistband is not exposed like on the Icebreakers, it is encased (flatseams) in the lovely merino. However, the waistband is narrow, which I find very uncomfortable. And the pants are really high-waisted, which I seriously dislike. If you like your long johns near (will be above or below depending upon your body) your belly button, you will love these. The Smartwool feels cushy and soft, I like their feel much better than the Icebreakers. They are also true to size (so are Icebreaker's & Ibex. Stoics run large.).I also have the Ibex & Stoic merino bottoms. The Ibex are even more high-waisted than the Smartwool, which rules them out for me. The fabric also seems thinner/looser, but that may be preferable for some, its still really nice. The Stoics are by far my favorite of these 4. The waistband is approx 1.5" wide, so its incredibly comfortable and doesn't cut in. The waistband is exposed, but the inside of it somehow feels like crushed velvet and not elastic, so that's great. They are also lower-waisted than the others, which for me is paramount. The material feels similarly thick and cozy like the Smartwool, so that's a plus. Please note the Stoics have a Y seam in the rear as opposed to the others. I thought it would bother me, but it doesn't. I wear XL except in the Stoic, as they don't make XL. I can easily wear the L in Stoic, and am even considering buying a pair in M for those times I may want them skin tight.
All 4 of these merino bottoms brands are very nice and functional, hopefully the little differences I've noticed may help you decide which ones to try. The merino fabric blows the synthetics out of the water for comfort and of course, you can do days of hard wear without washing and not end up with the nasty odors the synthetics produce.
