I was skeptical about wool for a base layer at first but was really intrigued by the fibers promise of warmth, wicking ability, and odor resistance. Until I took the plunge and got the Mid-weight top and bottom set Smartwool offers and wore them on a cold and windy bike ride. I was blown away by how warm I was able to stay even after sweating from the ride. I was so accustomed to cotton long johns that would just absorb my sweat then become a conduit for the very cold I was wearing it to protect me from. I now wear my wool long-johns pretty much 24/7 now that it is getting colder, only take them off to machine wash / hang dry them. No itch, no discomfort. My new second skin.
