December 13, 2013: I had been searching for a quality down vest since the beginning of the season. Many makes and styles were investigated, but each came up wanting on different fronts, whether it was thin insulation, poor design, old technology, etc., nothing met my specific needs until the Columbia Men's Powerfly Down Vest caught my eye. This vest had everything (well, almost...more on that later), quality construction, plenty of down insulation (800 fill), Omni-Heat thermal reflective lining, water repellency, Zipper-closed hand pockets, and came in black.

If you've ever watched a marathon and witnessed a runner get draped with what looks like thin aluminum foil after they've crossed the finish line then you have an understanding of the Omni-Heat thermal reflective lining technology. Basically, they sewed in a "Space Blanket" (look it up on Amazon) inside the jacket to reflect heat back into the body. The mylar space blankets claim to retain 80-90% of your body heat; I don't know if that's necessarily true, but considering I used a space blanket during a recent blackout and found it quite successful, I was completely sold on using this concept inside of a down vest, which loses quite a bit of heat via the arms.

Columbia addressed this problem by reducing the size of the arm sockets and utilizing a soft elastic band around the perimeter to keep heat in, and it works better than other vests I've owned. The elastic contracts nicely around the shoulder without being restrictive. I don't know how well this will wear over time, but it has held up with over 50 days of use.

The two negatives about the Columbia are the price and the ugly light-blue embroidered logo. At $170, the vest is at the very top of market. Yes, you're getting a lot of quality, but there are electric vests that come in around that price point (Columbia's own Electro Amp Core Vest has a MSRP of $150!) and the company is probably losing a lot of sales due to this poor decision. Fact is, Columbia has reduced the price on their own website, most likely to address this unfortunate choice. I waited until the price dropped to $110 on Amazon, and then pounced.

Second the light blue embroidered logo is heinous in my opinion. If you're getting a black vest, the last thing you want is a bright blue logo screaming away on your chest. Another terrible choice. In fact, the company did have the option to use a more tasteful color, since there's a "800 Fill" logo on the inside seam in an elegant medium gray, but they choose neon blue. Not good. The solution? The old Black Sharpie! In a matter of 5 minutes I was able to carefully color over the Robin Blue Egg color and turn that wrong into a big right (see pictures).

With a little patience and do it yourself wherewithal, I was able to get the vest I wanted.
